Prevalence and reasons for Permanent Teeth Extraction in a Tunisian Population: a prospective study

Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence and reasons for permanent teeth extraction and to establish correlations between the studied variables.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery of F. Bourguiba Teaching Hospital, Monastir, Tunisia, from August to November 2015.
An overall number of 348 patients aged from 15 to 85 years were included. Data regarding patients’ demography, oral hygiene, medical history, and reasons of extractions were recorded on a pre tested clinical sheet. Statistics were performed using chi-square and Pearson tests. The significant level was set at p<0.05.
Results: The number of extracted teeth was 543 performed on 384 patients. Most of them (82.29%) were hospitalized. Patients’ mean age was 45.42±13.3 years with a female to male sex ratio of 1.59. More than half of the patients had a medical condition (55.2%). The mean number of extracted teeth was 1.41±0.83. This mean was higher (1.75) in the 55-64 age group. Multiple extractions were performed in 26% of the cases. Most teeth were non-surgically extracted (79.2%). The majority of teeth were removed either for advanced dental caries (63.8%), or for periodontal diseases (13.2%). Third mandibular molars were most frequently extracted (28.7%). A significant correlation was found between the number of extractions and age (p=.000), as well as the condition status of the studied patients (p=.000). moreover, a significant correlation was found between mean DMFT scores (9.38±7.57) and number of extraction (p=.000).
Conclusions: Within the limits of the study, advanced dental caries are the most common cause behind tooth extraction. Age and medical condition are significant influencing variables.
