Histopathology Distribution of Oral Lesions: a 7-year retrospective study

Objectives: To establish oral lesion distribution diagnosed by histopathology.

Methods: A 7-year retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Dental Medicine of F. Bourguiba Teaching Hospital from April 2010 to July 2017. An overall number of 205 histopathological diagnoses were evaluated. Patients’ demographics, type and location of lesions were recorded. Data were reported as mean±SD and frequencies. A correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnosis was made using the Chi-square test. The result was considered significant at p set at <0.05.

Results: Patients’ mean age was 46.44±18.06. The female to male sex-ratio was 1.59. Thirty seven histopathological diagnoses were established. Cystic lesions were mostly present in 17.6%, followed by lichen planus in 11.2% of the cases, diapneusis 10.7% and epulis with 9.3%. Only, one case (0.5%) of malignant epidermoid carcinoma was present. The main location of oral lesions was the cheeck and the periapical area (21% each), followed by the gingival and lips in 16.6% and 14.1%, respectively. A correlation was found, in 70%, between clinical and histopathological diagnosis.

Conclusions: The present study shows that begnin lesions are mostly treated and diagnosed.
