Comparison of the sealing ability of Biodentine TM/dentin and Riva LC/dentin in posterior classII restorations: An in vitro study.

Objectives: Biodentine TM is a new calcuim silicate based material. Various authors have evalueted the micro leakage of composite resin restorations where glass ionomer cement has been used as a base in cassII sandwich restorations, but a literature survey limited studies on the microleakage analysis of similar restorations with Biodentine TM
The aim of this study is to compare and to evaluate in vitro the sealing of the interface between Biodentine TM / dentin and Riva LC /dentin in posterior classII restorations using the dye penetration test .
Methods: Ninety classII cavities were prepared on the mesial and surfaces of 45 extracted human permanent molars, which were randomly divided into two groups: G1 (n=22) restorated with Riva LC GIC+ Single Bond 2+Filtek TM Z350 composite resin and G2 (n=23) restorated with Biodentine TM +Single Bond2+Filtek TM Z350 composite resin. Samples were then subjected to thermocycling, followed by the dye penetration test. All teeth were embedded in acrylic resin and sectioned through the restorations. The results were expressed as ordinal scores from 0 to 3 at cervical, interfacial, and enamel margins. Statistics were done with SPSS20.0 software, Student t-Test and Khi-square (Fisher) tests were performed. The result was considered significant at p<0.05.
Results: There were stastistically significant differences in the sealing ability between the Biodentine TM group and the Riva LC to the dentinal interface (p<0.01). This difference was not observed in the enamel and the interfacial areas for both groups.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, significant scores were obtained with Biodentine, suggesting that this material could be used, clinically, as a dentinal substitute in cass II open sandwich restorations.
