Oral Health Status and Preterm Delivery: Is There a Relationship?

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the association between oral health status and preterm delivery.
Methods: This is a case-control study conducted at the maternity department of H. Chaker University Hospital and including 61 women (Test group) with preterm deliveries (<37 weeks) and 137 women (Control goup) with deliveries at term (>37 weeks). All patients were randomly selected with a normal distribution of the samples. Demographic data, oral hygiene habits, number of teeth present as well as decayed and restored teeth were recorded. Plaque and periodntal bleeding indices and periodontal pocket depth were noted. the Chi-square test was used for correlations between qualitative variables. Significance was set at p<0.05.
Results: Patients' mean age was 26.23 for the TG and 25.9 for the CG. The study revealed no statistical significant difference between both groups regarding orah hygiene habits and frequency of visits to the dentist. Most dental treatments were received in emergy. Indeed, There was no significant correlation according to caries disease between the two groups (p=0.129). The independent character of periodontal parameters as risk factors was not established, as well. No significant difference in the CPITN scores between groups was found (p =0.085).
There are many confounding factors to explain these associations.
Conclusions: Withins the limits of the study, no correlation is found between oral health status and preterm delivery. further studies, including a larger population and other parameters are needed.
