Black-line-stain and dental decay among children: a prospective study.

Objectives: This study aimed at determining the prevalence of BS among children in Ariana city, Tunisia, and to evaluate its correlation with dental caries.
Methods: This is cross-sectional survey including 268 children aged from 5 to 9 years and randomly selected from 3 schools for oral examination. The chi-square test and the Student’s t-test were used to assess the correlation between BS and dental caries prevalences and the Pearson test was used to assess the correlation between the severity of BS and dental caries frequency.
Results: Overall, 268 children were involved, 55,6% boys and 44,4% girls with a sex ratio=1,2, aged from 5 to 9 years with a mean age of 7,26±1,42 years. Most of them presented a mixed denture (87,7%).
The mean dmft increased with age from 6,62±3,37 for children in the [5-7 [ year-age group to 3,09±3,01 for those in the [7-9[ year-age group. The same result were seen with a mean DMFT from 0,26±0,77 for the [5-7 [ year-age group to 0,91±0,77 for the [7-9[ year-age group. BS was found in 38 children (21 boys and 17 girls, p>0,05) with a prevalence of 14,2%. BS scores 1 and 3 represented 36.8% each. The mean age of children with BS was 7.76±1.32. Most of them (79%) were aged from 7 to 9 years. There was a significant relation between BS prevalence, dietary habits (p=0.01), rich-sugar dietary (p=0.02) and age (p=0.02). Indeed, a significant correlation was found between BS severity and dmft indices (p=0.04), that was not the case for definitive teeth where no correlation was found between DMFT indices and BS severity (p=0.4).
Conclusions: The present study shows the relation between BS prevalence and age as well as its cario-protective effect.
