Location And Diameter Of The Alveolar Antral Artery: a radiographic Study.

Objectives: Knowledge and evaluation of Antral Alveolar Artery ‘s canal anatomy in order to prevent surgical complications before sinus lift, bone grafting and implant therapy. Antral alveolar artery (AAA) is the branch of maxillary artery that supplies lateral sinus wall and overlying membrane. The aims of this study were to examine the diameter, and location of the AAA canal and its morphology using cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT).
Methods: One hundred CBCT (200 maxillary sinuses) from patients from our departement undergoing implant therapy with or without sinus lift procedure were included and readed by Galilos viewer softweare. The intraosseous course and the diameter of the bony canal were recorded from CBCT sections. the distance to the alveolar crest were also measeaured . The results were provided through SPSS softweare (Chi 2 test ).
Results: Detection rate of AAA on cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) was 50.5%. The course of the vessel is most frequently intraosseous, and its diameter had a high incidence of diameters between 1 mm and 2 mm. Mean distances of the, AAA from alveolar crest range between 0.61 and 2.16 with a left side mean 1.137±0.304 and right side 1.2±0.364.
Conclusions: Anatomical variants of the AAA that may increase the risk of severe intraoperatory bleeding are frequent and must be detected by the clinician implementing the use of the CBCT.
