Effectiveness of micro-abrasion on enamel white lesions according to preoperative transillumination status : a clinical study.

Objectives: To asses efficacity of micoabrasion according to the preoperative status of enamel white lesions observed under transillumination.
Methods: 25 patient presenting enamel hypomineralization were selected. According to their appearence under transillumination, the lesions were divided into diffuse lesions (n=20) and demarcated lesions(n=24). In each group, we performed 10 cycles of micro abrasion for 10 seconds using Opalustre ( Ultradent, Jordan).
Following the micro abrasion procedure, standardized photographs were taken and L*a*b color values were measured (photoshop CS4) on sound and treated enamel areas (delta E). Comparaison of the color improvement between preoperative and postoperative status, was used according to the NBS criteria.
Results: Group presenting demarcated lesions on transillumination showed higher aesthetic color improvement comparing to the group presenting diffuse lesions.
Statistical analysis of the colors improvement showed that there is significant differences between both groups in masking enamel lesion (t student, p<0,05).
Conclusions: Transillumination status, is a reliable prognostic factor to predict the aesthetic improvement of enamel white lesions treated by micro-abrasion.
