Interactions between prosthetic materials and Candida albicans: a systematic review of the literature

Objectives: The purpose was to analyze the literature related to the proliferation of candida albicans on prosthetic materials and to investigate factors influencing this proliferation.
Methods: The research was conducted on PubMed/MEDLINE using the Boolean equation : "candida albican" [Mesh] AND "denture stomatitis" [Mesh] . The research was completed in other interfaces such as Google Scholar. after the selection of articles, data were extracted and analyzed.
Results: Thirty-one articles were selected. The heat cured acrylic resin is the most exposed material to the proliferation of candida. Metal alloys and ceramic are less involved. The state of the material surface, hydrophobicity and the presence of denture stomatitis are the most influencing factors for candida proliferation.
Conclusions: Denture stomatitis is more and more frequent. Thus, the maintaining of an adequate oral hygiene, as well as, the maintenance of prostheses are necessary to prevent this form of candidiasis.
