Efficiency of bleaching and microabrasion techniques on teeth with moderate dental fluorosis
Introduction: Dental flurosis is a fairly common condition in the Sudan. It is characterized by tooth enamel discoloration and subsequent unpleasant appearance of teeth. Different techniques have been advocated for improvement of the appearance of floristic teeth with variable degree of success and limited scientific evidence. Objectives: the aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of bleaching and micro abrasion techniques on removal of discoloration on teeth with moderate dental fluorosis. Methods: 44 school children aged 9-11 years in Abu-grown area in Khartoum state were included in the study. Only moderate fluorosis cases classified according to Dean’s index were included. The children were randomly divided into two treatment groups (n=22). In one group micro abrasion was performed while the other group received bleaching with 30% hydrogen peroxide. Tooth shade was taken before and after treatment and is used as indication of treatment success. Results: The results of the study showed that both bleaching and micro abrasion are effective in decreasing stain on teeth affected by fluorosis, but micro abrasion is better compared to bleaching in removing the stain P= 0.001. Conclusion: treatment of moderate dental fluorosis can be successfully achieved using micro abrasion technique.
