Denture related Oral lesions in eldery Sudanese Poupulation
Introduction: oral health survey data are essential for government decisions about dental care and preventive programs. Oral prevalence studies are important to know the state of health and the needs for treatment. Objectives: The aims of this study were to obtain a base line information on the prevalence of denture related oral lesions in elderly Sudanese population and to investigate differences in the presentation of these findings in relation to gender, subject’s age, age of denture, denture hygiene, denture condition, tombak and smoking habits. Methods: hundred complete denture weares, more than forty years old were interviewed and subjected to oral examination. Results: the overall prevalence of denture related oral lesions was found to be 33%. A significant relation was found between denture related oral lesions and subject’s age. However, no significant relation was detected between these lesions and gender. The data from the study suggest a greater association between dentures related lesions and denture age and denture hygiene. Also, there was an association between denture related lesions and defective dentures. In the present study no significant association was found between dentures related lesions and smoking or tombak usage. The current study in Sudanese population supports the studies of other populations, and revealed quite similar results to these studies. Conclusions: this study has provided information on epidemiological aspect of denture related lesions, which might prove valuable in planning future oral health studies and implementing preventive program in Sudan.
