Survival of Mobile Teeth in Periodontitis Subjects with Periodontal Therapy
Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the survival of mobile periodontally involved teeth over five years. Method: From total of 150 patients treated in 2008, 70 patients diagnosed with generalised chronic periodontitis and generalised aggressive periodontitis and were with mobile teeth that received periodontal therapy and supportive periodontal treatment by the same periodontist at a government unit for exactly five years were recruited. Patient (age, gender, smoking habit, medical condition, occupation)- and tooth (plaque score, bleeding index, tooth type, periodontal pocket depth, recession, mobility status, furcation involvement)-related variables were analysed from baseline and recent assessment record. Result: Plaque score and bleeding on probing in all teeth improved significantly after active periodontal treatment. Both periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment level shows gain in 1mm over the five years. 92.86%(65) patients have all mobile teeth retained in five years. 45 of 65 patients were diagnosed with generalised chronic periodontitis and 20 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitiss. Of a total of 468 mobile teeth, 381(81.4%) teeth survived for mean month of 59 months. 77.69%(296) teeth has grade 0 mobility, 11.28%(43) teeth of mobility grade I, 10.24%(39) teeth with grade II and only 0.79%(3) teeth has mobility grade III after five years periodontal treatment. All patients have completed non-surgical phase of periodontal therapy.12 patients, 7 with generalized chronic periodontitis and 5 with generalized aggressive periodontitis have undergone surgical periodontal therapy that involved total of 30 teeth (6.41%). Conclusion: From the findings, mobile teeth from periodontitis cases have shown to sustain for at least five years with periodontal therapy.
