Effect of Dentin Moisture on the Constitution of Bioceramic Sealers
Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of intraradicular moisture conditions on the main composition of three commercial bioceramic-based root canal sealers (Sankin Apatite, MTA Fillapex and Endosequence BC). Method: The composition of the sealers was evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) Energy Dispersive Analysis (EDX) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques. The sealers were evaluated before mixing, and after setting and used as control. Extracted teeth were prepared and assigned to 4 groups according to the moisture condition: (1) dry: using ethanol as final irrigation, (2) normal: using paper points until the last paper point appeared dry, (3) moist: using a Luer adapter for 5 seconds followed by 1 paper point, and (4) wet: the canals remained flooded. The roots were divided into 3 subgroups and filled with Sankin Apatite, MTA Fillapex and Endosequence BC. Samples were stored in 100% humidity at 37 °C for 10 days after which each root was sectioned transversally and longitudinally. The sealers harvested from longitudinal sections were analyzed using XRD and the transverse sections were analyzed using SEM/EDX. Result: The XRD analysis showed Sankin Apatite composed of Hydroxyapatite and tri-calcium phosphate. MTA Fillapex composed of Bismuth trioxide, calcium silicate and tricalcium aluminate. The relative quantity of the composition of both sealers in the wet condition was reduced compared to the control. Endosequence BC contained mainly calcium silicate and calcium silicate hydrate. Wet condition showed a small increase in hydrated calcium silicate. The EDX showed changes in the elemental concentration with different moisture conditions for all sealers. The surface morphology of the materials differed with different moisture conditions. Conclusion: The degree of moisture in the intraradicular does not affect the chemical components of the sealers. However, it changed its relative quantity.
