Effect of Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) Skin on Induced Periodontitis
Objective: To ascertain the effectivity of applying Yellowfish Tuna ( Thunnus albacares) Skin on Induced Periodontitis by determining the changes histologically and physically from the succeeding weeks after treatment is done. Method: This study used 21 rabbits injected with 6.8µl (10µg/µl) of Lipopolysaccharide of Salmonella typhimurium, and were divided into 3 groups (treated with Yellowfin tuna collagen graft, autograft, and without surgery). The method done for collagen extraction and gelling procedure were based on previous researches. The determination of collagen concentration was done by dry weight method and Sirius Red Collagen Detection KitTM. Randomized controlled single blinded study design was used for the distribution of animals to respective groups and for the histologic interpretation. Measurement of periodontal depth was employed to confirm pathologic state as well as successive changes, weeks after treatment. Result: Only 8 rabbits or 38.10% had developed periodontitis one week after exposure. The Yellowfin tuna collagen gel placed on the rabbits had a concentration of 186.71µg/µl. The amount of collagen that can be extracted is 0.37% of the mass input. The rabbits belonging to the Yellowfin tuna collagen group all had reduction of periodontal depth. The histopathology report suggests that there is no significant difference between the rabbits in the Yellowfin tuna group, rabbits in the Autograft group, and rabbits in the No Surgery group in terms of fibroblast infiltration (p=0.407) and bone formation(p=0.300). Conclusion: The collagen extracted from the skin of Yellowfin tuna was able to act as a scaffold for the body's cells to repair the damage and can reduce the periodontal pocket depth with bone growth.
