CBTC Images of Different Types of Cleft Lip Palate

Objectives: Cleft lip and palate are common development anomalies and its occurrence in Brazil is around 1:650 births. With the advent of CBCT, it is possible to assess the real extent of different types of clefts as well as to increase precision and accuracy during measurement of the affected area, and certainly present a positive impact on patient treatment. So this study aimed to depict different types of cleft lip and palate in CBCT images in order to allow full visualization of this condition. Methods: 30 subjects with CBCT exams (i-Cat Next Generation) of cleft lip and palate patients were randomly selected from the archive of the Oral Diagnosis Section of the Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo, with a maximum voxel of 0.3mm and a field of view that included the maxilla. Results: Different classification of cleft lip and palate patient was made based on the images obtained on Multiplanar Reconstruction of the i-Cat Vision® and the three-dimensional reconstruction of the Dolphin 3D Imaging® softwares. The unilateral complete cleft lip and palate was found on 15 (50%) patients, 9 (30%) were classified as bilateral complete cleft lip and palate and 6 (20%) were classified as unilateral incomplete cleft lip and palate. Conclusion: The evaluation of different types of cleft by three-dimensional images supports as based on the literature, that the incidence of unilateral complete cleft lip and palate are more common when compared with the others.
