Methods: Questionnaire was used and samples of 89 mothers of cleft lip with or without cleft palate children were included in this study. The data were descriptive statistically analyzed.
Results: Average age of all samples was 31.35±7.46 years. Most of them had studied at primary level and were housewives. They were single family with sufficient income and medical care was supported by government office health insurance. The first emotion, when knowing about the cleft of their children, was shocked and sympathized. The process of taking impression and obturator insertion for their children caused the most stress in most mothers. The coping strategies were trying to accept their children deformities and unburden their problems with their relatives.
Conclusions: Cleft lip and /or cleft palate caused most stress for the mothers whom their children were affected. The coping strategies were varied in each stage from one to one. However, medical personnel need to know the reactions, feeling and psychosocial impaction of parents who have cleft lip and palate children .This will lead to appropriate counseling and guidance to the parents.
