SHEAR BOND STRENGTHS OF AN ACRYLIC RESIN TO Ce-TZP/ALUMINA NANO-COMPOSITE

Objectives: Ce-TZP/Alumina nano-composite ceramics (Ce-TZP/A) is promising for applying to not only frameworks of crown-bridge restorations but also denture framework because of excellent mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate bonding characteristics and durability of Ce-TZP/A to acrylic resin in order to apply Ce-TZP/A to denture framework instead of metals.

Methods: Ce-TZP/A plates were treated with two kinds of surface treatments, and five kinds of surface modifications. Then, bonding specimens were fabricated by bonding cold curing acrylic resin to treated Ce-TZP/A plates. A shear bond test (n=8) was performed after storing specimens in water at 37ºC for 24h hours (abbr. as 24H), or suffering thermal cycling (5ºC and 60ºC for 30sec. mutually with 104cycles; abbr. as TH).

Results: Shear bond strengths (SBS) of MDP primer (MDP), Silano pen (SLP), and two kinds of combination treatment (CBT-P: TRB-P+MDP,CBT-S: TRB-S+MDP)were significantly higher than those of tribochemical treatments (TRB-P: 110µm particle, TRB-S: 30µm particle). And all the treatment conditions without ASB of the fractured surface showed cohesive failure. SBS of all treatment conditions decreased significantly after TH (p<0.05). CBT-S showed the highest SBS, however there was no significant differences between CBT-S and MDP, and between MDP and CBT-P (p>0.05). Rate of the remnant resin (RRR) on the fractured surface of two kinds of CBT decreased slightly. Especially, RRR of CBT-S indicated 100% (cohesive failure), and there was not significant different comparing to that of 24H (p>0.05).

Conclusions:  Ce-TZP/ A treated with ASB, then modified with TBS-S, then bonded by both Silane coupling agent and MDP monomer to an acrylic resin showed superior bonding characteristics and durability, if we tried to apply Ce-TZP/ A ceramics for denture base materials.
