Corticotomy-facilitated orthodontic treatment in bimaxillary protrusion

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to measure the rate of anterior enmass retraction under corticotomy assisted orthodontic tooth movement.

Methods:

Eleven  nongrowing patients (average age = 21.64 ± 1.91 years) with bimaxillary protrusion were treated with four bicuspid extraction including maxillary perisegmental corticotomy followed by the orthodontic en-masse retraction. The rate of anterior teeth retraction, was evaluated from the lateral cephalometric. before (T0) and after retraction (T1). Wilcoxon Signed Rank test was used for statistical analysis.

Results: The anterior retraction rate in subjects who were treated with corticotomy-facilitated  en-masse  retraction was 1.32 ± 0.33 mm/month.

Conclusions:

The result of this study show that corticotomy-facilitated en-masse retraction can retracted anterior teeth on  bimaxillary protrusion patients. Combination between translation and controlled tipping was found when incisors and canines retraction were completed. This technique also improved the facial profile, decreased upper and lower lips protrusion.
