A comparison of two types of desensitizer following teeth bleaching

Introduction: The major side-effect of external tooth bleaching is post-bleaching sensitivity. Several desensitizing agents have been reported to reduce this sensitivity. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste and GC Tooth Mousse Plus in reducing post-bleaching sensitivity. Methods: 20 adult subjects were recruited from the International University (IU) Dental Clinic and interviewed about lifestyle and dental habits. Impressions of both dental arches were taken, bleaching trays constructed, and instructions given to each subject. The bleaching material was 22% carbamide peroxide gel. Every patient who experienced sensitivity was instructed to apply one of two desensitizing pastes (Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste and GC Tooth Mousse Plus). The investigator and patients were blinded as to which product they were given. Results: 65% of subjects reported sensitivity after bleaching. Two subjects found the sensitivity so severe, even with the desensitizer, that they stopped bleaching within several days. Four subjects found that application of Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief or GC Tooth Mousse for between one and three days was sufficient. The remainder continued to use the desensitizer for up to two weeks. For the majority of patients both desensitizers reduced sensitivity, with no statistical difference between them. Conclusion: Post-bleaching sensitivity occurred in 2/3 of subjects. Both Tooth Mousse Plus and Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief were equally effective in reducing bleaching sensitivity in almost all cases. In a minority of patients, the desensitizers were not effective.
