Occlusal Scheme of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) Patients With Bruxism

Objectives: To study various occlusal schemes and their association with bruxism and TMD in a group of Thais. Methods: All 421 subjects were classified into 3 groups: bruxism only, TMD only or bruxism&TMD group by clinical assessment and interview. Then each subjects' occlusal schemes on the left and the right side, were classified as group function, canine protected occlusion or combination according to Glossary of Prosthodontic Terms (8th edition). Results: Of 421 subjects, there were 63 (15%) bruxism patients, 219 (52%) TMD only patients and 139 (33%) bruxism&TMD patients. The most common occlusal scheme in all groups was group function (63.5% of bruxism, 61.2% of TMD and 69.1% of bruxism&TMD group). The second common occlusal scheme for TMD and bruxism&TMD group was canine protected occlusion (26.9% of TMD and 25.2% of bruxism&TMD). For bruxism only group, combination occlusal scheme was found as a second common occlusal scheme. Chi-square test revealed a statistical relationship between occlusal scheme and these 3 groups of patients. Conclusions: Among bruxism and/or TMD patients in a group of Thais, the most common occlusal scheme is group function. There were significant relationship between occlusal scheme and bruxism and/or TMD condition.
