Association of self-reported Temporomandibular Disorder symptoms with socio-demographic factors

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the prevalence and association between self-reported symptoms of TMD and socio-demographic factors including age, sex and race

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of students from the National University of Singapore. A screening questionnaire from the American Academy of Orofacial pain was used to obtain the findings of number of self-reported symptoms of TMD. The survey included a section containing questions on socio-demographic factors. Chi-square test, logistical regression, Mann-Whitney U test, and Fisher's Exact test were done to test for associations between self-reported TMD symptoms and the socio-demographic factors. Bonferroni correction was applied in adjusting for multiple comparisons. 95% confidence interval was used for all tests.

Results: 63.9% of participants had at least one self-reported symptom of TMD. The number of self-reported TMD symptoms was not found to be significantly associated with age and race. Females were more likely than males to have at least 1 symptom of TMD (OR=1.57).

Conclusions: Gender was associated with having at least one self-reported TMD symptom.
