Effects of Two Concentrations of Carbamide Peroxide in Composite Restoration

Composites are considered the most favorable tooth-colored restorative materials. Although the color match of a composite restoration may be established, long term color changes may occur due to surface staining, microleakage and wear-dependent surface changes. Bleaching has become a popular treatment to remove surface stain and restore aesthetics. Objective: To find out the effects of two concentrations of Carbamide Peroxide bleaching agents to a composite restoration. Methods: a total of 30 specimen were prepared with class V restoration and were classified into 3 groups of 10 specimens: group 1- exposed in 16% concentration of Carbamide Peroxide, group 2- exposed into 10% Carbamide Peroxide and group 3- exposed in distilled water, which served as the control. Each group underwent die penetration to test for the presence of microleakage, Vicker's test for hardness, Vital Easy Shade for color change before and after bleaching, and examined under stereomicroscope for roughness. Chi square test and Kruskall Wallis ANOVA were used to detect the level of significance among the variables tested. Results: All the test done revealed no significant differences among the three variables. roughness (p= 0.67), hardness (p=0.26), microleakage (p=0.52), and color (p=0.65). Conclusion: Concentration of Carbamide Peroxide do not have any effect on the roughness, hardness, microleakage, and color of composite restoration.
