Corrosion Level Bracket-wire Result of Chx and Povidone Iodine Mouthwashes
Background: Bracket and wire combination is a part of fixed orthodontic appliances, whilst stainless steel and nickel titanium are two of the mostly common used wires. Nickel ion is one of the elements in the composition of bracket and wire combination known to cause corrosion. Plaque acumulation which often cause problem to orthodontic patient, is usuallly manage by using chlorhexidine gluconate or povidone iodine mouth wash. Objective: This research was conducted to evaluate the corrosion level in bracket-wire combination as the result of using chlorhexidine gluconate and povidone iodine mouthwashes. Method: The samples used in this research were 0.016 inch stainless steel and nickel titanium orthodontic wires combined with nickel-containing and nickel-free brackets. Samples were devided into four groups and performed cycling immersion in chlorhexidine gluconate or povidone iodine, and artificial saliva, for three times of one minute continuously for one month; equals to 10000 cycles. Then, the samples were dissolved in aqua regia, added with standard solution reagent for atomic absorption spectrometry, and performed nickel ion count. Result: Two way ANOVA statistical analysis between bracket/wire locations, bracket types, wire types, and mouthwashes shows that there is no significant difference in the corrosion level, using nickel ion as parameter (F=0,033; p>0,967). conclusion: the mouthwashes cause changes of the bracket and wire composition and structure. Keywords: Corrosion, chlorhexidine gluconate, Povidone iodine, bracket-wire.
