Anatomical Variation in Condylar Path Angle in Malay Females
Objectives: To investigate the condylar path angle (CPA) among Malay females, compare the measurements with the average values (25°-35° Campers) and compare the right condylar path angle with the left condylar path angle. Methods: Thirty subjects were selected for this study , impressions were taken , poured into type IV stone. Facebow transfer was taken for each subject and casts were mounted to their centric position on semi-adjustable articulator. Protrusive guides were constructed on the anterior teeth to allow mandible to be protruded for 5 mm, and angles were measured using protrusive record method. Results: For the right angle it was found that 13 subjects (43.33%) were within the range of the average value, 17 subjects (56.66%) were out of range. The measurements for the left angle 10 subjects (33.33%) were found to be in the range of the average value and 20 subjects (66.66%) were out of range. More than half of the sample did not fall within the normal range. There was a strong linear relationship between left and right CPA among the Malay females. Conclusions: The Malay females are considered as an ethnic variation in regards to CPA, they cannot be treated the same way as the Caucasians in regards to that angle. CPA should be considered in constructing fixed and/or removable prostheses combined with the use of semi-adjustable articulators; Protrusive record method for programming the articulators can be reliable if modified by using efficient bite registration material and making it reproducible by using protrusive guide.
