THE EFFECT of GREEN TEA DRINK on SALIVARY pH

BACKGROUND: Green tea is a popular drink all over the world and many people like to consume it. The previous researches have found out that green tea will strengthen the tooth structure due to the flour content in green tea. Green tea contains polyphenol which mainly consist of catechin. Catechin has an effect in delaying acid formation on the teeth. OBJECTIVE: To know the effect of green tea on the salivary pH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty subjects were divided into three groups, two experimental groups and one control group and each group consisted of 20 persons. Green tea with sugar was given to the first experimental group, whereas green tea without sugar was given to the second experimental group. Mineral water was given to the control group. The salivary pH of each treatment from each group was measured by using pH's paper from “GC” before drinks, immediately after drinking and 15 minutes after drinking. RESULTS: Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA statistic test. There is no significant difference between the control group and all experimental groups ( p = 0.265 ). CONCLUSIONS: Green tea doesn't have an impact on salivary pH.
