DHE using TQM Approach Training Effect for Dental Care Givers

The Indonesian School Dental Health Program has covered only 55.79 % of all elementary school because of a shortage of dentists and dental nurses, and they have to undertake concurrent duties. Produce Dental Health Education (DHE) using Total Quality Management (TQM) training for the school community by forming dental care giver to assist dental health staff, particularly in preventative and promotional activities, is one of the offering solution. Objectives: To observe effectiveness of Dental Health Education using Total Quality Management Approach training through dental care givers' oral health knowledge and behavior. Methods: Dental Health Education using Total Quality Management Approach training were given to 42 dental care givers consisted of school principals, 4th Grade teachers, and teachers of Health and Physical Education or the School Health Program from 5 elementary school in West Jakarta, Indonesia. Test of knowledge and behavior by questionnaire were conducted before and after giving the training. The data was tested with paired simple T-test. Results: The majority of the caregivers; were in the 35–44 years old age group (42.9%); were of the female sex (81%); and had tertiary education (35.7%). Caregivers' knowledge and behaviour, such as oral hygiene instruction, diet counseling and caries etiology, significantly improved (p<0.05). Conclusion: Dental Health Education using Total Quality Management Approach training is effective in improving the care givers' knowledge and behaviour.
