The Mandibular Third Molar Impacted Related To Deuteromalay Ethnic Groups

An impacted tooth is occurred because the total length of the alveolar bone arch is smaller than the total length of the tooth arch. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the relation between the mandibular third molar impacted and ethnic groups in Deuteromalay. Methods: The study was held on April 30, 2007 until May 14, 2007 at Trisakti University Hospital, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Jakarta, Indonesia. One hundred and five consecutive patients with age interval 17-25 years (71 females, 34 males) were examined by questionnaire and clinical examination. Patients divided into 2 groups, mixed marriage ethnic groups and unmixed marriage ethnic groups such as Padangnese, Betawinese, Sundanese and Javanese. Results: The impacted mandibular third molars were found in 16 of 37 persons of mixed marriage ethnic groups (43.24%) and 15 of 68 persons of unmixed marriage ethnic groups (22.01%). Chi-square analysis showed that there is significant difference (p<0.05) between Deuteromalay ethnic groups and mandibular third molar impacted.Conclusion:The mandibular third molar impacted in mixed marriage ethnic groups higher than unmixed marriage ethnic groups. The mandibular third molar impacted in unmixed marriage ethnic groups from the highest to the lowest was Javanese (60%), Sundanese (20%), Padangnese (13.33%), and Betawinese (6.67%).The highest incidence of impacted mandibular third molar in mixed and unmixed marriage ethnic groups, Javanese was class 1 ramus relationship, class A depth, mesioangular with percentage 62.5% for mixed and 66.67% for unmixed marriage ethnic groups.
