Oral Management Needs of HIV Patient in Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital Jakarta
HIV infection is a growing concern throughout the world, including in Indonesia. The number of infection is rising annually. DKI Jakarta is on the top list as the Indonesia's province with the highest number of new infection. The improving of quality of life in HIV positive patients is the major concern for all the treatment given to the HIV patients. One of the factors that can influence the quality of life is the oral and dental health of HIV patients. Unfortunately there is no data yet on the oral and dental problems of the HIV patients in Jakarta. Objective: to evaluate oral and dental problems and management needs of HIV outpatients in POKDISUS AIDS Ciptomangunkusomo Hospital Jakarta during December 2006 - March 2007. Methods: a cross-sectional, consecutive study, by examining the oral and dental status of HIV patients Results: 104 patients agreed to join the study. The subjects consisted of 90 males and 14 females, mostly on their third decades of life. Most of them suffered from gingivitis, dental radices and dental caries, with the oral lesions such as pseudomembranous candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia and angular cheilitis.The management needs included scaling, tooth extraction and cavity filling, and also antifungal treatment. Some of the patients almost never received dental treatment. Conclusion: Most of the HIV patients in this study needs invasive dental treatment such as scaling and tooth extraction, and they need to concern more on their oral health to have better quality of life.
