Oral Mucosal Disorders in Type-2 Diabetic Patients

Diabetes Mellitus is known as causative and predisposing factors in the development of several oral disorders. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the oral mucosal disorders which might be found in type-2 diabetic outpatients of Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital Jakarta Indonesia and to assess the trend of the disorders. Methods: Eighty one subjects, 50 type-2 diabetic patients and 31 subjects as the control group, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated the oral mucosal conditions and the glycemic control (fasting blood glucose level and HbA1C level). Results: Oral mucosal disorders were more frequently seen in the diabetic group. Oral mucosal disorders based on the frequency order were fissured tongue (80%), dysgeusia (24%), petechiae (12%), hypogeusia (10%), recurrent aphtous stomatitis (8%), echimosis (6%), angular cheilitis (2%), pseudomembranous candidiasis (2%), median rhomboid glossitis (2%), geographic tongue (2%), and traumatic ulcer (2%). Conclusion: The most common oral mucosal disorders found in this study were the tongue lesion (fissured tongue) and taste disturbance (dysgeusia)
