A Retrospective Study of 15 Cases of Nasopalatine Duct Cysts

Objectives: A retrospective study of patients with nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDC) in south of Thailand was performed in comparison with previous studies. Methods: Fifteen patients with NPDCs were diagnosed and treated with NPDCs at Faculty of Dentistry, Prince of Songkla University and Hatyai Hospital during 1996-2004. Clinical, radiographic and histological data was selected. Results: The age of patients ranged from 23 to 65 years old with the mean age of 44. All of cases revealed symptoms. From the measurements of the occlusal films, the maximum diameters of the cystic lesions ranged from 1 to 5 cm. with the mean diameter of 2.4cm. The ovoid (67%), heart (20%) and round (13%) radiolucency were observed presenting well-defined borders in all of the 15 cases. Histopathological studies showed stratified squamous epithelium lining(93%) and psudostratified columnar epithelium lining (93%)in the major cystic walls. All of the cases showed moderate-sized nerve bundles and blood vessels. Conclusions: Although the number of the cases involved by the present study is small, the findings of these cases are similar to previous studies.
