Effect of Chlorhexidine on Post Extraction Bacteremia
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of preoperative rinsing with Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.05% on post extraction bacteremia. Methods: The study protocol was approved by the institution's ethics committee, and the patients gave their informed consent in writing. Twenty respondents participated as the subjects on the clinical trial. Treatment was conducted as follows : ten subjects in treatment group rinsed with CHX 0.05% and ten subjects in control group rinsed with NaCl 0.9%. Blood vein samples were taken directly after extraction and put in the tubes containing Brain Heart Infusion broth. The blood samples were incubated in anaerobic condition. Data obtained of Colony Forming Units of the bacteria growth was analysed using a descriptive method. Results: There was no bacteria growth using CHX 0.05% ,while bacterial growth was found using NaCl 0.9%. Conclusions: We concluded that preoperative rinsing with Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.05% is effective in suppressing post extraction bacteremia. It can be used as preoperative disinfectant to prevent the risk of post extraction bacteremia.
