Evaluation of Medicaments for Deciduous Non-vital Pulp Therapy

Objectives: The aims of this study were, to evaluate clinically the effects of different commercially available intracanal medicaments and to compare and evaluate the appropriate use of root canal medicaments for non-vital pulp therapy in deciduous molars. Methods: A total of 70 children within 5-7 years old attending the Institute of Dental Medicine (Yangon) were involved in this study. They were divided into 7 groups including a control group. Each group had 10 subjects and all the subjects were selected by two examiners. Child having no medical contraindications and one of the mandibular deciduous molars requiring non-vital pulp treatment were included while those with gross coronal breakdown, advanced pathological root resorption or more than one tooth indicated for non-vital pulp treatment were excluded. Commercially available root canal medicaments such as Formorcresol, CMCP, Endofil, Pulperyl, Septomixine forte and Vitapex were used as a medicament for each group according to the manufacturer's instructions. All the results were recorded in the data sheet and were compared with the result of control group. All clinical procedures were performed by one investigator and clinical signs and symptoms were scored before and after the treatment. The outcome of different groups was statistically evaluated by using “Z” test and Epi info 6 software. Results: The results suggested that Formocresol, Pulperyl and Septomixine forte were significantly successful than control group. Using Vitapex was found to be highly significant and CMCP, Endofil were not significantly different from the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that Vitapex is the most effective root canal medicament for this study group.
