Co-operative Learning Model in Conservative Clinic at PSU Dental School

Moving toward the new learning styles to promote active learning and encourage independent lifelong learning, the Conservative Department has introduced holistic approach and patient-centered concepts through a co-operative learning model. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate student learning achievement, knowledge and satisfaction after implementing a co-operative learning model in Conservative clinic since 2001. Methods: A small group of the 5th and 6th year dental students had regularly once a month discussed cases which aimed to integrate concepts, beliefs, principles, and values to fulfill ethical and professional objectives. This allowed students to understand and share the significance of their educational experience, the importance of rendering quality professional services, and life-long learning. Students also proposed and discussed their interesting topics and took turn to lead the meeting. Instructors facilitated and encouraged atmosphere of questioning as well as providing students with constant feedback and mentoring. The survey had been designed to acquire students' opinions regarding the learning objectives and processes, self evaluation of achievement, assessment methods, as well as identifying issues that need changes and constructively suggest improvement. Results: The results showed that majority of the students (from 2001 – 2004) were satisfied with the holistic approach objectives and learning by sharing processes. They also rated high score of satisfaction for learning achievement and assessment methods. The suggestions for improvement were better to including other clinics especially Prosthodontics, no requirements, rotation of instructors, and reducing bias by calibrating how to do evaluation. Conclusion: This study suggests that co-operative learning model in conservative clinic at PSU dental school may be useful as a learning approach to promote the desired student positive learning outcomes and professional development with high students' satisfaction.
