Efficacy of Fuji7 in Preventing P&F Caries in Indonesian Children

Objectives: To assess the efficacy of Fuji7 in protecting first permanent molars against caries, in a group of high caries risk children living in Jakarta. Methods: 76 children, aged between 5 and 8, with recent history of high caries were selected. Each student also had 4 erupting first permanent molars. DMFT was recorded for each child at baseline and 48 month. They were randomly assigned to either a control(C) or test(T) group. Ethical clearance for the study was given by the CEF and written consent was obtained from parents at the start of the study. The erupting first molars in the test group, received the following treatment: isolation using cotton roll, 10%PA was applied for 15sec, rinsed and dried using a cotton pellet, Fuji7 was applied to the exposed surface and protected during setting using a gloved finger, varnish was applied and oral hygiene instructions were given before dismissing the child. Children in the control group only received oral hygiene instructions. Results: At base line, there were 152 teeth in each group and the S and D&F components for the two groups were: T: 147;5 and C: 143;9. Chi-test was performed and there was no difference between the two group (p>0.05). At 48month review, there were 136 teeth in the test group and 152 teeth in the control; the S and D&F components for the two groups were: T: 118;18 and C: 108;44. There was a statistical difference (p<0.05). The relative risk of a tooth in the control group to develop caries was calculated to be 2.73X higher than a tooth in the test group. Conclusions: At the end of the 48month period and for a population of high caries risk chidren, the protection of erupting permanent molar with Fuji7 was an effective preventive method.
