Abrasive Ability of Dentifrices in Thailand

Objectives: To determine the enamel and dentin abrasivity of dentifrices available in Thailand. Materials and methods: Six toothpastes; Close up (crystal white), Kolbadent, Systema, Neo-herb, Her-bric and Herbal cool were used in this study. Abrasivity of the dentifrice was determined by the radiotracer method by brushing the phosphorus-32 human enamel and dentin samples with tested dentifrice slurries. The radioactivity of the dentifrice slurries was then measured using the American Dental Association reference material as a reference. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test. Results: Tested toothpastes had mean Relative Enamel Abrasion (REA) value ranged from 0.79±0.39 (Neo-herb) to 4.09±0.43 (Herbal cool) and mean Relative Dentin Abrasive (RDA) from 21.09±1.25 (Kolbadent) to 94.16±4.79 (Neo-herb). All tested toothpastes had the enamel and dentin abrasivity within the ISO and Thai Industrial Standards Institute recommended values. Conclusion: Of all the dentifrices tested, Herbal cool had the highest enamel abrasivity while Neo-herb had the highest dentin abrasivity. The abrasion levels of all products were considered to be safe for enamel and dentin.
