Oral Health Status of Patients : The CPM Program of CEU

Patients treated in the clinical infirmary form part of the clinical training of students at the same time an opportunity to help those who cannot afford to pay for dental services. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the oral health status of patients under the Comprehensive Patient Management Program of the Oral Diagnosis Section of College of Dentistry, Centro Escolar University. Methods: Profiles of the subjects were determined according to age, gender, residence, and employment status. Oral health status of patients covered in the program during school year 2002-2003 using purposive sampling with 400 completed cases out of the 687 patients treated was determined according to dental condition, edentulousness, soft tissue condition, over-all bone support and oral hygiene status. Frequency and percentage distribution was used to report the data. Results: Out of 400 patients (255 were female) whose treatments were completed, 161 with age range 17 to 22, 90 (23-28), 63 (29-34), 40 (35-40), 27 (41-46), 15 (47-52), 4 (above 53-year-old). The program had reached far areas like Bataan and Batangas, 244 were unemployed, 46 students and with the 110 employed, 31 were professionals, 30 housemaids, 17 office workers, 9 salesladies, 9 drivers and 14 self-employed. Decayed teeth numbered 3112, 3018 missing, 778 filled. There were 182 Class III cases of edentulousness for upper arch, 46 for Class IV, 45 Class I, 36 Class II. For the lower, 224 Class III and 4 Class IV. Periodontal pathologies with bone resorption were seen in 143 patients, noting fair oral hygiene. Asthma was present in 111 patients as common medical problem. Conclusion: The oral health status of patients treated presented several treatment options helpful for the clinical training of students and at the same time an opportunity for the school and students to reach out to the under-privileged sector of society.
