Study of the Relationship between Periodontal Diseases and Diabetes Mellitus

Objective: This study is to describe the relationship between periodontal diseases and diabetes mellitus.

Method: The sample consisted of 108 diabetic patients (Male - 30 and female 78), all of whom were regular patients at Diabetic Clinic, Thingangyun Sanpya Hospital. History of selected diabetic patients was taken according to the record form and data. Clinical periodontal examinations have done according to the CPITN scores.

Results: The CPITN score 3 (shallow periodontal pocket 4 to 5 mm) was the most prevalent score (40%). The CPITN score 4 (deep pocket more than 5 mm) was also found in 37% of diabetic patients. 21% of diabetic patients were found CPITN score-1 and score - 2 . Only 2% of diabetic patients was found to be healthy periodontal condition. CPITN score - 4 (deep periodontal pocket) and socre - 3 (shallow periodontal pocket) were found in 49% diabetic patients with oral habits such as smoking , betal nuts chewing and alcohol drinking. But these scores were found in only 29% of patients who had no oral habits. Diabetic patients with over 5 years duration have more periodontal breakdown than those under 5 years duration. Tooth loss due to advanced periodontitis was found in 59 % of diabetic patients.

Conclusion: This study showed there was relationship between duration of diabetic mellitus, oral habits and periodontal breakdown.
