Effects of S. spontaneum L. to ALT and AST Activities

Peroxide which has toxic effect on oral tissue is still being used as bleaching agent for tooth discoloration. Therefore application should be under professional supervision. Traditionally bleaching agents for discolored teeth has been used in Jakarta community which is called as glagah (Saccharum spontaneum L.). Previous study revealed that S. spontaneum L. was also effective in dissolving calculus. However this study is still preliminary and further research on all aspects of this materilas should be conducted. The toxicity test is one of tests that need to be conduct to know the side effects of the material. Objective: To prove the safety level of the S. spontaneum L. extract to ALT and AST activities in blood plasma of Wistar rats. Methods: Twenty four Wistar rats were used and devided into eight groups. The treated groups were given extracts with dosages of 0.5g/kgBW, 5g/kgBW and 15g/kgBW of the S. spontaneum L. orally, and were killed after 2 hours and 24 hours. The control group was also killed after two hours and 24 hours after applications with aquadest. Liver blood plasma was taken to examine the ALT and AST activities. Results: The ANOVA two ways test shows that there was no significant difference on ALT and AST activities (p>0.05). Conclusions: That there is no influence of the S. spontaneum L. stem extract to ALT and AST activities in Wistar Rats blood plasma.
