Effect of herbal mouthwash on malodor, plaque, bleeding index

Objective: To determine the effects of herbal mouthwash on volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) level, plaque index (PI) and bleeding index (BI) in gingivitis subjects and the recurrence of parameters after scaling, root planing. Methods: Sixty gingivitis subjects who had over 80 parts per billion (ppb) of VSCs were included in the study. At baseline, VSCs level, PI and BI were recorded. Subjects were randomly distributed into herbal or placebo group. Then, they were asked to rinse with assigned mouthwash .VSCs was measured at 30 minutes and 3 hours post-rinsing. For the following 2 weeks, subjects were rinsed with mouthwash twice daily after toothbrushing. All parameters were recorded again at day 15. In the second phase, baseline parameters were determined after scaling and root planing. Following randomized redistribution, subjects were rinsed with the assigned mouthwash. All parameters were recorded again at day 15. Results: At 30 minutes and 3 hours post-rinsing, VSCs levels were significantly different when compared to baseline in both groups. However, no significant differences were found between groups. At day 15, significant differences of VSCs, PI and BI were found in both groups when compared to baseline. VSCs in herbal group were significantly different from placebo group. In the second phase, VSCs at day 15 was not significantly different when compared to baseline in both groups. However, there was a significant difference between groups. PI of placebo group and BI of herbal group were significantly different when compared to baseline. No significant differences in clinical parameter were found between groups. Conclusions: Both mouthwashes can significantly reduce malodor after one rinse. However, herbal mouthwash can better reduce malodor over placebo mouthwash in gingivitis subjects and can prevent the recurrence of VSCs after scaling and root planing.
