Effect of Topical Fluoride by Three Methods of Tooth Cleaning

The caries preventive effect of topical fluoride application has gained acceptance after positive findings from many studies. However, caries preventive effect after cleaned teeth from different material is still being researched. Objective: In this study, we measured the effects of topical fluoride after cleaned teeth with brush, pumice and prophylaxis paste. Method: 30 sound premolars, which were extracted for orthodontic purposes. The teeth were divided into four parts mesio-distally and buccal-lingually under water with diamond disces. The first part was cleaned with brush in tap water, the second part was cleaned with pumice, the third part was cleaned with prophylxis paste. All part applied with 1.23% APF gel 4 minutes and stored in synthetic saliva 24 hours. Fluoride measurements were performed by acid etching of enamel with 0.5M perchloric and sodiumhydrozide 0.25M. Result: According to the analysis of variance, showed no significant difference statistically (p>0.05) of F ion uptake among brushing, pumice and prophylaxis paste before applied topical fluoride. Conclusion: Hence, we conclude the the cleaning teeth before applied topical fluoride was not necessary, but we do it in case which had heavy plaque, calculus and stain and for gain attitude the children patients will appreciate the dental treatment.
