Comparison of Frictional Resistance with Oscillation in Buccal Segment

There have been various studies about frictional resistance between bracket and archwire, however most previous studies were conducted using a fixed model, which did not simulate the tooth mobility that occurs intraorally. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the moveable experimental model by using a custom made oscillator to evaluate the effect of oscillation upon the frictional resistance in buccal segment or multibrackets systems. Methods: The first part of this study was to compare the frictional resistance between fixed and moveable models 20 per each types and the second part was to investigate the frictional resistance under oscillatory conditions in the buccal segment model among three types of 0.022x0.028 inch bracket slots: stainless steel, ceramic and composite reinforced metal slot with 0.018x0.022 stainless steel wire. Totally, 120 of sample sizes were tested. Results: The result showed no significant difference in frictional resistance between 2 types of models at p<0.05. In second part it was found that there were significant differences among all tested groups (p<0.05). Both non-oscillatory and oscillatory conditions showed the highest mean of static frictional resistance in the ceramic group (216.02±11.5 and 132.68±13.41, respectively), followed by the stainless steel group (233.70±11.25 and 161.43±14.71, respectively) and the ceramic group (151.90±14.20 and 100.67±9.88, respectively). Conclusions: The reductions of frictional resistance in oscillatory condition were 38.9, 33.8 and 30.9% in stainless steel, composite reinforced metal slot and ceramic brackets, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of tooth mobility upon mastication and other oral functions should be considered, since it has a major effect in reduction of the frictional resistance as well.
