Influence of Traditional Role, Society's Expectations on Women Dental Educators

Objective: Career women are generally expected to fulfill their traditional roles in the family in Asian societies. There is an increasing number of women in the academic workforce. A survey was carried out amongst women educators in Malaysia (Ma), Myanmar (My) and India (In) to identify the influence of the traditional role and society's expectations on their career. Methods: A 4-part questionnaire seeking information regarding the biodata of respondent (Part A), academic background (Part B), the amount of contribution to domestic tasks (Part C) and the respondent's level of agreement to 24 statements concerning traditional role and society's expectations of women (Part D) was used. Results: There were a total of 67 respondents comprising 11 professors, 15 associate professors/senior lecturers, 34 lecturers and 4 tutors. Generally (>50%), respondents from all countries had domestic help to take care of house cleanliness, laundry and garden. However, the women still had to take care of the children's welfare, plan and cook meals as well as do grocery shopping for the family. High proportion of husbands in Ma (>60%) contribute frequently by paying bills, maintain car and contribute to children's welfare. On a scale of 1(strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree), there was strong agreement (>7) in all countries that women are expected to take the major responsibility for care of the children and they manage by balancing career and family needs. There was also strong agreement in Ma and My that research activities would require extended working hours and lack of childcare facilities at work forms an obstacle to career development. In and Ma also strongly agreed that the secret of success of working women is a supportive husband. Conclusion: Traditional role and society's expectations of women have an impact on the career development of women educators.
