Effect of Fibrin Sealant to Tooth Socket Healing: Radiodensitometric Analysis

There are many methods to reduce the total time for osseointegrated implant, including using the substances which may promote the bone healing. Fibrin sealant, which has been used as hemostatic agent, may enhance the healing. Objective: To find if fibrin sealant can promote bone healing of extracted tooth sockets. Methods: Eight subjects who had bilateral impacted third molars were included in this study. After surgical removal of the impacted teeth, fibrin sealant was injected into one side whereas the other side was designated as control. Then digital radiographs were taken, scanned, and analysed immediately, and every month up to 5 months after the operation. The radiodensity of bone was expressed as the ratio between the measured value of tooth socket to dentin of second molar. Results: There was no serious complication. The radiograph indicated increase of the radiodensity according to postoperative time. The radiodensity at immediately, 1,2,3,4 and 5 months postoperatively in the experimental sides were 0.774, 0.800, 0.786, 0.833, 0.809 and 0.873, respectively. The values of the control sides were 0.772, 0.750, 0.761, 0.776, 0.818 and 0.806, respectively. The radiodensity of the experimental sides at 1, 3 and 5 months after operation were statistically significantly greater than the control sides (p<0.05 for the first and third month and p<0.01 for the fifth month) as tested by paired t-test. Conclusion: Therefore our results suggest that fibrin sealant may promote tooth socket healing.
