A Retrospective Clinicopathological Study of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Lesions

Objectives: To elaborate characteristics of oral and maxillofacial lesions found at OPaDCORE Laboratory.
Methods: A 4 years (2016-2019) cross-sectional observational study was held at OPaDCORE (Oral Pathology for Diagnostic, Collaborative, Research and Education) Laboratory. All histopathology reports of biopsy and smear with information regarding clinical diagnosis, histopathology diagnosis, gender, age, location of specimen, and dentist specialist were retrieved.
Results: Among 98 diagnoses of tissue biopsies, the most frequent diagnosis was radicular cysts (15,31%), followed by epithelial dysplasia (13,26%), periapical granuloma (12,24%), fibrous hyperplasia (11,22%), and mucocele (8,16%). Lesions were commonly found in female (64,29%) than male (35,71%,). The most frequent lesion found among male was radicular cysts (20%) whilst female was granuloma (17,46%). When classified to age groups, the most frequent lesion among children (age 0-17 years old) was dentigerous cysts (40%), adults (age 17-64 years old) were periapical granuloma (16,67%) and dentigerous cysts (16,67%), and elderly (age >65 years old) was epithelial dysplasia (30%). 133 cases were submitted for oral mycological smear and 9 cases were submitted for cytology smear. Candidosis more encountered in female (52,38%) than male (47,62%). The commonest type of candidosis found in the study was oral thrush (41,67%). Cytology smear for malignancy screening more commonly performed in male (66,67%) than female (33,33%).
Conclusions: Oral and maxillofacial lesions were commonly found in female adults. The most frequent lesion in the study was radicular cyst with maxilla as predilection.
