ORAL HEALTH LITERACY in PATIENTS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD)

Objectives: Patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) are at higher risk of developing oral diseases. Improving oral health literacy (OHL) can be beneficial to impact their outcomes and recovery rates. However, there is a lack of research assessing OHL of this population. This study was aimed to assess OHL levels of patients with SUD and identify its affecting factors by using Indonesian version of Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD-ID) instrument.
Methods: 156 patients (139 men, 17 women; aged 18 to 49 years) enrolled in the Indonesian National Narcotics Board Drug Rehabilitation Program during January to February 2018 were participated consecutively to complete a self-administered HeLD-ID with 5-point Likert-type scale of responses in this cross-sectional study. The sociodemographic and behaviours data was also obtained through this questionnaire.
Results: The overall mean of HeLD-ID score was 2.85 ± 1.00. From sociodemographic aspects, the score was significantly associated to age and sources where they gained health information only. Gender, region, marital status, numbers of dependents, occupation, income per month, and type of health finance did not affect the scores. From behavioural aspects, the ownership of toothbrush and daily routine of toothbrushing also influenced the scores, but the last time of dental visit did not.
Conclusions: The OHL level was found to be moderate among a sample of patients with SUD. As an initial study, this result can be used as a basis for future research and planning appropriate health programs to improve their OHL levels based on factors affecting the scores.
