The Oral Hygiene Eco-friendly Intentions of Generation Y and Why?

Objectives: (1) To determine knowledge, awareness and practices of Generation Y towards the use of eco-friendly oral hygiene products in Hong Kong. (2) To determine the validity of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) in explaining intentions, purchasing and recycling behaviours.
Methods: Social media (multiple) was the vehicle of data collection, targeting Generation Y. Information on recycling behaviour (BEH), intentions (INT), awareness (AWA) and purchasing behaviour of eco-dental products (BEHD). All aspects of the TPB was assessed: Subjective Norms (SN), Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC) and Attitude (ATT). Bivariate and regression analyses were employed in analysing the data.
Results: Over 500 valid responses were obtained. AWA, INT, BEH and BEHD scores were low. There was a highly significant and positive correlation between the TPB determinants and recycling behaviour (r ~0.3, p<0.001). An increase in INT scores was associated with ~30% increase in the likelihood of BEHD (OR 1.31, 95%CI 1.21, 1.42, p<0.001). An increase in ATT scores of 1 was associated with ~10% increase in the likelihood of BEHD (OR 1.10, 95%CI 1.01, 1.19, p<0.05). PBC was significantly associated with INT (β 0.2, p<0.001). BEH was significantly associated with INT (β 0.5, p<0.001). BEH was significantly associated with INT (β 0.2, p=0.001).
Conclusions: There is low awareness and knowledge of environmental conservation among generation Y in Hong Kong; and their purchasing behaviour of eco-friendly dental products (BEHD) is particularly low. The Theory of Planned Behaviour was useful and valid in explaining recycling behaviour, intention to use and purchase eco-friendly dental products.
