Osteoprotegerin Expression during Orthodontic Tooth Movement Inducing Probiotic Lactobacillus Casei in The Rat Periodontal Ligament
Objectives: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei on expression of osteoprotegerin during orthodontic tooth movement.
Methods: This is an experimental study using Randomized Block design. Fourty eight male white rats (Rattus norvegicus, Wistar strain) used for the animal model, divided into four groups: control groups, control groups with probiotic Lactobacillus casei supplementation, orthodontic treatment groups and orthodontic treatment groups with probiotic Lactobacillus casei supplementation at 1 days, 7 days, 14 days and 21 days. At the end of the experiment, the animals were euthanized for tissue examination and the osteoprotegerin expression was examined. The data were analyzed with Anova Multivariate and regression analysis.
Results: The result at tension sites showed, significant different (p<0.05) orthodontic treatment groups with probiotic Lactobacillus casei supplementation at Day 1 (3.67±1.155), Day 7 (10.67±2.082), Day14 (14,33±3,215) and Day 21 (17.00±3.464). At compression sites also showed, significant different (p<0.05) orthodontic treatment groups with probiotic Lactobacillus casei supplementation at 1 days (3.33±1.155), 7 days (2.33±1.528), 14 days (1,67±0.577) and 21 days (4.33±0.577).
Conclusions: Probiotic Lactobacillus casei supplementation during orthodontic treatment has great promising up-regulates osteoprotegerin expression at tension sites. This mechanism could be shorten the inflammation and improves the alveolar bone remodeling during orthodontics treatment.
