Bioactivity of Curcuma xanthorriza Roxb. and Curcuma domestica Val.

Objectives: Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb and Curcuma domestica Val. is an herbal plant in Indonesia common used as a traditional medicine, such as in inflammation, diarrhea, malignancies and many other diseases. Based on the results of phytochemical tests, Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb. and Curcuma domestica Val. contains several bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, curcuminoids. Flavonoids compounds contained in Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb. and Curcuma domestica Val. extracts. acts as an antioxidant and antiproliferatif, terpenoids as antibacterial, saponin as antitusive & expectorant, and alkaloids that act as an analgesics and antimicrobials.

Methods: The Aim of the study is to determine the bioactivity of Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb and Curcuma domestica Val. by using a brine shrimp lethality test. Larva of brine shrimp which hatch in 24 hours, continue immersed for another 24 hours in 10, 100, 500, 1000% concentrations of each extracts.
Results: The results showed that both Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb and Curcuma domestica Val. had high bioactivity with probit numbers on Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb., in several concentrations as follows: 10% = 3.25; 100% = 4.85; 500% = 6.64 and 1000% = infinite, while Curcuma domestica Val. Probit number are: in 10% = 2.67; 100% = 4.64; 500% = 5.47 and 1000% = 6.48 with regression r2 = 0.98.

Conclusions: The conclusions of this study that Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb and Curcuma domestica Val. has high bioactivity properties because of it is ability as an antiproliferative. Curcuma xanthoriza Roxb has a higher bioactivity properties compare to Curcuma domestica Val.
