Morphology of Mandibular Condyle Visualized from Cone-Beam CT in Normal People

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate morphology of the normal mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa visualized from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Methods: The sample included 68 Thai young adult volunteers, 25 males (37%) and 43 females (63%), with the mean age of 21 years. Kodak 9500 Cone Beam 3D system was used for digital imaging and all morphological data were measured via CS 3D Kodak Dental Imaging Software. Frankfort plane was used as a horizontal reference.
Results: Mean medio-lateral dimension (MLD) =19.28±2.73mm; antero-posterior dimension (APD) =7.32±1.36mm; intercondylar angle (ICA) =134.72±13.50mm; intercondylar distance (ICD) =101.72±13.50mm; depth of glenoid fossa (DGF) =6.14±1.41mm; slope of articular eminence (SAE) =34.50±7.70° and 27.90±7.69° (left and right respectively). Gender differences in TMJ morphology were investigated via t-test. MLD, ICD, and SAE in male were significantly higher than female (p<0.05). The relationships among morphology variables, body height, and weight were observed using correlation coefficient. MLD was associated with DGF and SAE (r=0.22 and 0.20). DGF was related to vertical condylar angle (VCA) and APD (r=-0.21 and 0.22). Body height was associated with MLD, ICD and SAE (r=0.56, 0.46, 0.22 and 0.20 respectively).
Conclusions: This study demonstrated the morphological data of normal mandibular condyles and glenoid fossae seen on CBCT in a group of Thai young adults and found that MLD, ICD, and SAE were associated with body height. These variables in male subjects were shown to be significantly higher than female.
