Effect of Acrylic Removable Partial Denture on Periodontal Tissue’s of Abutment Teeth in Diabetic Mellitus Patients at Dental Hospital of Hasanuddin University

Objectives: To find out the influence of using acrylic removable partial denture on periodontal tissue of abutment teeth in diabetic patients.
Methods: This study was analytic observational with cross-sectional design. A total of 20 samples was included in this study by sampling purposive technique. The measurements of oral hygiene and gingivitis were performed using plaque and gingival index.
Results: Total of 20 samples had diabetic mellitus, there were 2 patients (10%) had normal plaque index, 1 patient (5%) had moderate plaque index, and 17 patients (85%) had poor plaque index. For gingival inflammation in abutment teeth: 9 patients had mild gingivitis and 11 patients had severe gingivitis. In non-diabetic patients: 12 patients had mild gingivitis, 7 patients had moderate gingivitis, 1 patient had severe gingivitis. Also, 3 patients (15%) had normal plaque index, 14 patients (70%) had moderate plaque index, 3 patients (15%) had severe plaque index.
Conclusions: There is an influence of using acrylic removable partial denture on destruction of periodontal tissues of abutment teeth in diabetic patients. For non-diabetic patients with acrylic removable denture in Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital, more than half of them had mild gingivitis with moderate oral hygiene on abutment teeth.
