Extraction Potassium Alginate from Brown Algae Sargassum sp as Alternative Dental Impression Material

Objectives: This study aims to identify the content of potassium alginate as result of extraction Sargassum sp
Methods: This study was pre-experiment with one shoot study case design. In initial stage, we performed extraction to obtained potassium alginate's extract. Then, it weighed used analytical scale in gram (g), after that, functional group test was performed using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) then compared to standardized potassium alginate to find out a similarity in functional group. Data was obtained then presented in tabulation.
Results: Extraction potassium alginate from Sargassum sp showed dark brown characteristic. We obtained the content of potassium alginates as 12% or 300 gram from total 2.5 kg dried algae. Based on functional group test, it showed potassium alginate from extraction was similar with standardized potassium alginate, based on hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, -COO bond, C-O-H, C-O-C bond and –K in both of alginates.
Conclusions: Potassium alginate that extracted from Sargassum sp has similarity with standardized potassium alginate based on physical characteristics and functional group analysis using FTIR with total content 12%. This result showed that potassium alginate extracted from Sargassum sp has a potency to be developed as alternative impression dental material in dentistry.
